Lichens recorded during excursions of the 12th Congress of the Slovak Botanical Society SAS and at Vindemia lichenologica in 2024 (Veľká Fatra Mts, Nízke Tatry Mts, Western Carpathians)

s. 163–174

Abstract: This contribution presents records of 84 epiphytic, terricolous, lignicolous, and epilithic lichen species from fifteen localities in the eastern part of the Veľká Fatra Mts and the western tip of the Nízke Tatry Mts in Central Slovakia. In addition, we report the occurrence of the lichenicolous fungus Illosporiopsis christiansenii. Of the recorded lichen species, three are legally protected (Gyalecta herculina, Lobaria pulmonaria, and Nephroma resupinatum), and nine, including the aforementioned legally protected species, are critically endangered (CR), five are endangered (EN), twelve are vulnerable (VU), and three species fall into the category of LR:nt. Other notable macrolichens include Anaptychia ciliaris, Parmelia submontana, and Ramalina fraxinea. From crustose microlichens, the rare and critically endangered species Gyalecta fagicola and Gyalecta herculina were recorded (additional recent finding from Malá Fatra Mts is added in Discussion). Another noteworthy find is Caloplaca turkuensis, recently recorded outside its previously known Slovak locality, with a corrected identification following an earlier misattribution as C. monacensis. The presence of deadwood, particularly in natural or near-natural forests, was shown to be a key substrate for lignicolous species, including Xylographa paralella and X. vitilligo, which are indicators of ecologically stable forests with continuous deadwood availability. Furthermore, the fruticose lichen Usnea barbata, once considered extinct in Slovakia, was recorded in several locations and now appears to be relatively common, suggesting a reconsideration of its conservation status. This study results from a collaboration among researchers, nature conservation professionals, and citizen scientists.

Notes on the occurrence and ecology of common crupina (Crupina vulgaris) in Slovakia

s. 175–182

Abstract: In the presented study we focused on evaluating the occurrence and ecological requirements of common crupina (Crupina vulgaris Cass.) in Slovakia. The species is rare in the Pannonian region (occurring mainly in the Matricum region, and, rarely in the Eupannonicum region) across a total of 23 localities. Recent surveys have confirmed its presence at only 8 geographically isolated sites, supporting its classification as a rare and endangered species in the EN (endangered) category. Regarding substrate preferences, C. vulgaris primarily grows on volcanic rocks (44% of localities), on loess (39%) and less frequently on calcareous sediments (17%). As a therophyte, it favours open sites with little or no vegetation cover. Nevertheless, it can also establish itself in dense, closed stands, provided that these stands remain low enough for the species to tower above them and access sufficient light.

Key words: Asteraceae, endangered species, Pannonian region.

Interesting records of endangered vascular plants from the territory of central Slovakia; annotated list of data from years 2020–2024

s. 183–230

Abstract: Our study provides new information on the distribution of 99 threatened vascular plants in the southern part of central Slovakia. Species records were collected between 2020 and 2024. The annotated list includes one critically endangered (CR), four endangered (EN), 11 vulnerable (VU), 57 near threatened (NT), 24 least concern (LC) and two data deficient (DD) species. Notable findings include Carthamus lanatus growing in grasslands near Slatina village, Trinia kitaibelii near Horné Turovce, and several orchid species observed in the Nová Baňa and Gemer regions.

Three decades after the sowing of plants in the Jakub Protected site near Banská Bystrica – what has changed?

s. 231–238

Abstract: After more than three decades since the deliberate introduction of seeds of 35 locally non-native plant taxa into the territory of Jakub Protected Site, six hemicryptophytes still persist, while representatives of other life forms have either failed to establish or have become extinct. Thriving populations with dozens of flowering individuals have developed for Linum perenne and L. tenuifolium. Other established species, Aconitum moldavicum and Helleborus niger, occur in lower abundance and remain mostly sterile. Micro-populations of Dictamnus albus and Hepatica nobilis survive with only a minimal number of individuals and are on the brink of extinction. The sowing of seeds of a species from the genus Stipa at the site is uncertain. It was most likely S. pulcherrima, whose population is expanding, while two additional feather-grass species appear to have colonized the area spontaneously.

Commented overview of interesting floristic findings from eastern Slovakia V.

s. 239–250

Abstract: The fifth part of the miniseries summarizes findings of 32 vascular plants taxa recorded in the area of eastern Slovakia, of which two are naturalised archaeophytes and twelve neophytes. Brief information on the critically endangered Cyperus flavescens is also provided, as well as the first report of the garden escape of Rudbeckia fulgida in Slovakia. Several cultivated species were recorded as garden escapes, e.g. Cotoneaster hjelmqvistii, Salvia ×floriferior and Verbena bonariensis var. conglomerata.

Diversity of wetland habitats on the example of the Šaštín Stream in Záhorie Lowland

s. 251–261

Abstract: Small streams and water bodies play an important role in the territory of the unique Záhorie region. In its northern part, numerous streams can be found that meander along their entire length, or at least partially, in depressions between sand dunes. These water bodies significantly enrich the biodiversity of an area. A wide range of plant communities and habitats occurs here, from aquatic and wetland habitats to alluvial forests, which are confined to the narrow watercourses. Meanders have been preserved mainly in forested landscapes. In deforested areas (fields, meadows, pastures), they are often straightened and transformed into canals. From a phytocenological point of view, the most numerous biotopes were stands of association belonging to the Sparganio-Glycerion and Phragmition communis alliances, whose characteristics varied depending on whether the groundwater level was above or below the soil surface.
